Why are Filipino drama shows cheesy?

They're all cheesy in a way of story, acting, CGI, and actors. I'm talking about ABS-CBN. They should stop using new teenage preppy actors. Old school actors like Aga Mulach and Sharon are underrated for some reason. Rising talent like Sarah Geronimo should stay on TV. Not the new overrated actors. Overall, the shows don't make sense anymore.

Why are Filipino drama shows cheesy?
Actually, most of those plots are being rehashed again and again. For the life of me, I couldn't understand why my mother loves watching them. But since I love my mother and she's already 66, I just let her be. I want her to do the things she likes doing.





I cringe everytime I see those soaps on TV. But if you think about it, America produced Days of our Lives and I get the same effect. ^_^"
Reply:Cheesy isn't the exact definition, "masa" is more like it. They the management is trying to cater to the needs of the Philippine mass market instead of trying to educate, uplift, and evolve its thinking through different approaches and new ideas or concepts. The go by what is accepted, tested, proven to be effective instead of taking new risks. The use new faces not perhaps of trying to build them up, but because new talents are cheaper compared to the established ones.





Its rival network on the other hand, if you havent notices, has tried its hand on taking new risks, although tit brought back the Marimar mania, instead of using established actors, it took the risk of infusing "old and new" (marian and dingdong) if you get my point. Plus, they are constantly trying to develop their talents and are careful enough not to go over board by over-exposure and milking them dry. Notice the constant news about artist-training.





ABS has resulted to the Pinoy-big brother way of acquiring and discovering new talents by letting the market decide who's hot and who's not instead of the old way of developing talents. GMA may have its starstruck search, however, even if the audience decides who the winners are, they still have total control over the talents (avengers and survivors, for example, where is jackie rice now?)





ABS i think needs to change its ways of discovering new talents and needs to come up with fresh ideas if it wants to jump out of its what you call "cheesy" shows.

Reply:i miss GMA... we only have TFC here... and oh, we don't have time watching the prime-time drama shows, etc... my dad loves to watch 'Wowowee', though...and my mom loves to watch 'Citizen Pinoy'... I only watch 'Game ka na ba?'...

I've got this one huge debate with my nanay because of those nonsense time eating primetime drama shows.


I came home from work and i saw her in the sala watching TV. I said "hay, napakadaling hulaan naman ang susunod na mangyayari. Sigurado may mamamatay dyan." Then after three days or so, one of the main characters just died because of some yet another "STUPID" accident or another vengeful plot in the story, who cares? Hahaha! After that i laughed very annoyingly while saying, "yan namatay tuloy, sana nga mamatay na silang lahat!" And guess what, my nanay yelled at me, "eh anong gusto mong panoorin ko!?"

Some shows may indeed be overrated, and some stars may have lost their glitter, but the company is a Filipino company and we should, therefore, "tangkilikin ang sariling atin" (support our own), come Hell or high water.

Now i like GMA and TFC cause of Wowowee, Pilipinas Game KNB, and Marimar!
Reply:Every show ABS-CBN have are all cheesy..even its News shows are cheesy. ABS-CBN loves to sensationalize things, I'm talking about the way they report things in their news report shows. On a more general note, YES, their shows are cheesy. They did not even reprimanded the noon time show host for the scandal that guy have done. More cheesy and crappy shows from ABS-CBN. I don't watch too much local TV but I don't have cable tv subscription. But I do watch some comedy shows from GMA 7, Laugh Out Loud :D
