Silent Hill confusion...?

I was reccommended to watch Silent Hill by those that thought it was a scary movie. I didn't find scary at all. I watched it twice today because I found it rather confusing. I really don't get the concept of the whole movie, and I was curious as to if anyone did know the meaning of the movie.

I do have a few questions of my own.

Why did Rose take Sharon to Silent Hill?

Was everyone there dead?

Why did they kill Alexa, and how was she connected to Sharon?

Silent Hill confusion...?
To answer your questions...

"Why did Rose take Sharon to Silent Hill?"

Rose took Sharon to Silent Hill because of Sharon's increasingly dangerous sleepwalking episodes, during which she would call out the town's name. Soon after, Rose found out that Sharon is originally from West Virginia, where Silent Hill is located. Therefore, she got the idea that maybe if she brought Sharon there, she could somehow jog her memory and possibly cure her.

"Was everyone there dead?"

No, no one in Silent Hill was dead (until the very end, that is). Rose, Sharon, Cybil and everyone else was alive.

"Why did they kill Alexa, and how was she connected to Sharon?"

The cultists did burn Alessa* alive, but they didn't kill her - she survived the burning. The scarred woman in the oxygen tent that we see when Rose talks to Dark Alessa is Alessa, now 39 years old. As for why they burned her, it all goes back to her mother, Dahlia. The cult members and their children labeled Alessa a witch and endlessly tormented and humiliated her because she had no father. After years of trying to persuade Dahlia to reveal the name of Alessa's father (who may or may not have actually existed in the first place), the cult ultimately decided that Alessa had no father, which to them could only mean that she was born of a demon, and therefore a walking, talking sin that needed to be purged. So the cult did what they'd always done - they planned to burn Alessa alive to "purify" their town.

As for how Alessa is connected to Sharon, despite what a lot of people believe, Alessa is not Sharon's mother - at least not in the traditional sense. As Dark Alessa tells us, Sharon is the physical manifestation of the goodness left in Alessa. So when Dark Alessa says to Rose "She's not your daughter. She's hers [pointing to adult Alessa]", she's basically implying that Sharon was "born" from her in the sense that she's a part of her. It's kind of like when part of certain organisms are severed and the severed portion eventually grows and becomes its own creature, essentially a clone of the original (i.e. - tapeworms). So in this case, the "severed portion" would be the goodness left in Alessa, and the resulting "creature" would be Sharon.

And if you're confused about the ending, here's my interpretation...

Contrary to popular belief, no, the mother and daughter are not dead. They're still in Alessa's alternate dimension. Here's the deal...

There are three parts of Alessa:

- Alessa (the scarred woman in the oxygen tent)

- Sharon (Alessa's good side)

- Dark Alessa (Alessa's evil side)

Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these manifestations and the alternate dimensions, it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (which in addition to the fact that she had no father, would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch). That being the case, this is what happened:

1) Dark Alessa does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon at the church. Dark Alessa (the evil side) simply recombines with Sharon (the good side), creating a new and complete "reincarnated" Alessa.

2) Alessa's pact with her evil counterpart that we saw in the flashback not only ensures that she will help her exact her revenge, but that Alessa, after making herself "whole" again, will also have a second chance at life with a new (and surely in her eyes, better) mother: Rose.

3) And as for the ending:

Alessa's plan works - she gets her much deserved revenge on the cultists, Dark Alessa and Sharon recombine and create a newly "reborn" Alessa, and she ends up with Rose (who either isn't aware or just doesn't care that this little girl isn't "her Sharon" anymore) as her new mother. Now with Sharon's memories of the outside world to work with after reuniting her two halves, Alessa can extend her alternate dimension and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want them to leave her alternate dimension and in her eyes, for good reason. The real world is where Alessa was hurt, abused and humiliated. In the real world, she felt unsafe, unloved and that the people are untrustworthy (especially men, considering that the absence of her father - assuming he even existed - was the source of her torment, in addition to her horrific experience with the school janitor). Alessa wants to live out the rest of her new life with her new loving mommy in her alternate dimension, where she's in control and she feels safe. However, this is also how Dahlia's warning to Rose, "Be careful what you choose," comes to pass. Unfortunately for Rose, this end result means that she is essentially trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension indefinitely.

Hope this helps. :)
Reply:No problem - glad I could help. Thanks for the 10 pts.! :) Report It

Reply:Sharon is the purest part of Alexa...the purest part of her unsoiled by the rape...untouched by the horror of being burned alive. Alexa literally separated that part of herself...as an infant...had herself placed in an orphanage...in order to set a trap for a human woman...who would take Sharon in...raise her...love her...and when the time was right...Sharon would start having difficulties with her health...nightmares that would start the train of events that would lead Rose and Sharon to Silent Hill. When Rose took Sharon home from the orphanage...she stepped into a trap she had no chance of escaping. The sole reason for Alexa breaking off the best part of herself and sending Sharon to the orphanage was to bring a human woman who loved Sharon enough to let herself become possessed long enough to breach the circle of faith the cult members had spread around themselves. Alessa wanted in but their faith was too strong. So she set a trap...years in the making...to breach the circle of faith...and send the cultists screaming into the bowels of hell. Rose and Sharon are not dead. Alessa would no more harm Rose than she would kill off the purest part of herself. The same way she did not kill her mother Dahlia...is the same way she would not kill Sharon. Both women loved the best part of her...one could not prevent the horror...the other was instrumental in getting that revenge. Silent Hill is a slice of purgatory/dimension all created by Alessa's pain. And it is there that Sharon and Rose will stay...I guess...until movie number two...safe...not dead...or alive...but safe...in a limbo of Alessa's own making.
Reply:In order to understand the movie you should play the Silent hill games on Playstation, The movie was based on the game.
Reply:Sharon would always mention Silent Hill in her night terrors..and rose thought she could solve her daughters problems by taking her there.

Not exactly dead, kinda stuck in another dimension (at least thats what I think they are in)

They killed Alexa because they thought she was evil (bastard child ect) and Alexa was Sharons mother. (Alexa was raped by the janitor)

*Edit*

I've only played one of the later games, I'm sure there is someone that can better explain this.

and the girl below me is right, her name is Alessa..not alexa...brain fart on my part.
Reply:1. the reason Rose took Sharon to Silent Hill was explained in the movie. Sharon would sleepwalk and cry out the name Silent Hill, and Rose took her there to find out if there was anything about Sharon's past located there. Sharon was adopted from West Virginia and Silent Hill is in West Virginia. she wanted find out why she calls out for Silent Hill.

2. NO ONE DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only person out of Rose, Sharon and Cybil that died is Cybil when they burned her for helping Rose. when Alessa attacks at the end, all those people die. but initially NO ONE is dead.

3. her name is ALESSA and they were TRYING to burn her alive for supposedly being a witch. I guess being born out of wedlock makes a person a witch in their town. she's connected to Sharon by the fact that Sharon IS Alessa. and they did NOT kill Alessa. as you saw in the movie, she was rescued by the police officer and taken to the hospital where she did NOT die.

4. Alessa did NOT mother Sharon. she is the goodness that was left of Alessa. she is NOT Alessa's "child". she is a manifestation of Alessa's goodness in child form. this was also explained in the movie.

and you're right, the movie isn't scary. creepy yes, but not scary.

also, Bugs was right. you really should play the games (Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill, and Silent Hill 3) in order to really understand the movie. the movie itself was based mainly on the original Silent Hill game for the PlayStation 1 with elements taken from the second game, Silent Hill 2 (armless Patient Demon, Pyramid Head) which has nothing to do with Origins, 1 or 3. theories surrounding the second movie installment speculate that it will be based on the 3rd game, showing a grown up "Sharon" (in the first game her name was Cheryl and changed to Heather in the third) finding out who she really is...Alessa Gillespie.

another note, in the original game, Dahlia wasn't Alessa's mother, she was her "creator". take a look at the links below find out all about the Silent Hill games that fit together to make up this story.
Reply:Sparrow's answers are excellant. I played all 4 games in the Silent hill series, and the movie confused me, Lol,. Parts from all 4 games were made into a movie, basically characters are drawn to Silent hill to find missing loved ones, in the games, depends on how a person plays levels in the entire game, a character lives or dies.

But I have no explaination of the movie, other then what sparrow had shared, they may be in another dimension, which leaves the movie open for another sequel.
Reply:1. Sharon has been experiencing severe nightmares and has begun sleepwalking. The only clue to the girl's condition is her repetition of the name "Silent Hill." Desperate for answers, Rose takes Sharon to the town of Silent Hill.

2. I don't think so.

3. Alessa used her power to create an infant (Sharon) from the last pure, uncorrupted part of her soul, and her dark alter ego delivered the baby to Toluca County Orphanage, where it would be adopted by Chris and Rose DaSilva.
Reply:Here is my answer:

1.) Because Sharon been hallucinating about Silent Hill, so Rose figure out that, why don't she bring Sharon there so the whole thing would end but unfortunately Alessa opens the door to Silent Hill so there where trap in that City!!

2.) No there not, once Alessa been corrupted by the dark side!! with her longing for vengeance to the people of silent hill, he cursed them and forever hidden in the gates of silent hill!!

3.) Alessa was been burned alive because of the reason that she has somekind of power or also called as witch craft!! Well the people where afraid what will happen to them of they let her alive.....she is somehow connected by Sharon because of having the same face as Alessa!!
Reply:WoW! You could sit through that piece of crap twice?!?!?! You're tough. It was really nothing, wasn't it?
