I have some seriously crappy neighbors in every sense of the word, and their kids are driving my poor dogs up the wall. We have a very nice 42" chain link fenced in backyard, but that is no deterent for the little angels next door that easily climb it and drop trash in our yard for the dogs to "Fetch".
I looked into privacy fencing and that will cost over $500 (ouch!) not including labor (even if I help put it in).
I'm on a fixed income so looking for other options. I came up with the idea of buying a role of kennel wire to attatch to the fence %26amp; grow honeysuckle (as much as I don't want this intrusive plant near my rose of sharon bushes).
Sooooo, I need to know....I hear honeysuckle grows fast..can anyone tell me how fast it grows per season or per month? And can you grow it from "starts" or do you need to use seeds?
I would appricate any ideas....thanks!
How Fast Does Honeysuckle Grow?
this is a dicey situation. You do not want your garden or turf to be overvcome by this pest/weed. At the same time your pet is being pestered!
I could truly be mean an tell you to plant either poision ivy or sumac along the base of your fence. Place a full screen to protect you pets and allow the vegetation to effect the true pests!. You could even purchase folding barbed wire to put atop your fence to stop the throwing. Neither seems appropriate given a neighbor or laws.
Two things you may consider, aside from talking to their parents, is to set the sprinkler system (set one up if need be) to spray the fence and over at the time of day these beast torment your pup. Wait and watch then turn on the full system and watch the idiots run. The other is more "loving" and probably better for you and the pup.
Pups, dogs, cats, they all yap at neighbors. Invite the people that they do not like, and the one's you do not like, to a small grouping. Forget you and let the pup and the kids get to know each other up close and without a fence. Add a few cookies/snacks and the bond will last for quite awhile.
You may be surprised at how much the pup takes to the very people that tormented him. It will give you a break in walking him and exercising him for years to come. The young torment what they both love and do not have. Invite them into your joy and love.
Reply:If allowed to grow `sideways` along a fence, most types of climbing Honeysuckle would make 10 feet in 5 years. This varies with position, cultivation, and climate. Cuttings (starts) can be taken throughout Summer, and planted Autumn (Fall). Rose of Sharon is safe if Honeysuckle is trained to fence.
Reply:I know for a fact that honeysuckle grows quickly, and dependin on the species, it could have your fence thickly covered in a around 3 years...
Another plant that is great for covering fences, depending on your region, is moonflower. The species is Ipomoea alba, and make sure it is or you could end up with a hallucinogenic plant.. But anyway, the flower are large, fragrant, and white, opening at night. It grows quite fast and seems to be a kind of morning glory.
Reply:I probably shouldn't tell you this but, i feel for you, so i will.
Plant blackberry along the enemy line. Plants placed 2 ft. apart will stop them cold. They're cheap, grow fast and absolutely gush fruit....and thorns.
Don't tell'em you heard it here......
