How would you prune an overgrown rose of sharon shrub/tree?
I would cut it flush with the ground, then take out a shovel and dig out the root ball, then burn the entire mess. Where I live, (Pittsburgh) Rose of Sharon is considered more of a nuisance than anything else. My mother used to call them "bee bushes," because the flowers would attract so many bees. They grow very fast, send up volunteers all over the yard, and make it difficult to maintain a nice yard.
Reply:Pruning:

Since Rose of Sharon blooms on current year's growth, prune in late winter, before the plant breaks dormancy.

-Prune 1/3 of the stems by removing dead, broken, tangled areas and cutting the remaining stems to your desired height.
Reply:I would wait till Oct. to prune it. First look for any crossing branches and take those out. Find a picture of one and try to shape it like that. Cut out any that you think are too long. Cut just below a leaf.
