Half of my Rose of Sharon shrub is dead. What could be wrong?

My Rose of Sharon has many branches that come up from the ground. Half of these branches never leafed out. I have trimmed these dead branches and now it looks like half is gone. What could be wrong. It gets full sun.

HIBISCUS syriacus rose of sharon. don't worry, sharon will be by later to care for it. just kidding...a bit of garden humor. tee hee. okay, it leafs out later in spring then most deciduous. could yours be a late bloomer? temperatures in winter that drop to -10 deg f or lower can result in some die back if not mulched well. but what do i know, i think the coldest it got in my back yard last winter was a chilly 56 deg. but i do have the right answer for you.

american horticultural society has links to all state and local master gardener sights. click on your state map and you will be linked to an expert from your own neighbor who knows all about your own local problems, soil, bugs, etc. get real info from a real expert living and gardening just down the street from where you live. no more taking garden advise from some kook from california who tells bad rose of sharon jokes. your local master gardeners will take care of all you garden needs and the answers you get from them will always be the best answer. give a call, or follow the link. they will love to hear from you.
