How are Rose of Sharon close to foundation of old house?

I've seen them trimmed and used as a tall hedge, and some of mine have gone to trees. I planted some tiny seedlings on the north side of house last year hoping for a hedge on our alley to drown out traffic noise,and sturdy enough keep vandals from wanting to pluck and run or even plow them up with their cars. However, hubby is concerned about foundation. Does anyone know if it's safe to have them close to the house? If not, can you recommend a hedge, or ground cover that will act as a sound absorber. Need something that can be very close to the old stone foundation and take shade and water because town repaved the street, and the grassy strip between house and pavement can get pretty wet even though we tried to dig a little trench to rediret flow of rain run off.

Propagating rose of sharon bush and a butterfly bush....?

I am interested in propagating them and wondered what is the best way to do that? The butterfly bush is a beautiful dark purple bush that is about 8 feet tall and way too wide where I have it. It is about 5 years old. I thought maybe I could take some cuttings and plant it elsewhere. Can anyone give me good advice on what to do with these beautiful bushes?

You need to take a cutting of new growth off of the butterfly bush and stick it in slightly moist potting soil and it should root within a week or two. I've tried it myself and it works. The same would probably work for the rose of sharon too.

My Rose of Sharon NEVER Bloomed or Grew well until I Pruned it One Fall. Try It ! I'm a Huge Fan of the Loppers now !
Reply:I assume you are talking about hibiscus syriacus (sp?) I had one at my old house and it was extremely hardy. If yours is not leafy, I would check the soil conditions. Is you soil like clay? Is the drainage poor? Do you have it in full sun? All these things affect foliage. What has changed about the environment recently to cause the decline?

My rose of sharon tree has not budded (04/24). Is this normal?

Are you fertilizing?? Is shrub getting enough sun? My Rose of Sharon is all budded up also and so far only a very few blooms. Same last year. I am going to transplant to a sunnier area and fertilize. Did not realize until I read entries in this forum that Rose of Sharon needs to be on a regular fertilizer schedule!!


The bud drop could be caused by gall midge. Place some buds in a sealable plastic bag. After a day or two, you may see the very small yellowish worm-like larva on the plastic. Control the midge affecting buds with Orthene sprays as needed. Hope this helps.

I am in Plant Zone 5A and mine doesn't usually start to do anything until around May 24. We can get frost up until then. My Hardy hibiscus is the same way. It gets started later but then it really takes of.
Reply:Hibiscus, in general, are very, very slow to break dormancy. Don't worry about your Rose of Sharon....if you still need some piece of mind, scratch the bark with your fingernail. If it's green, it's still alive.





As just an aside, don't worry at all about your perennial Hibiscus. they are even slower to break dormancy. I leave part of the stalk from last year so I know where it is, but by the end of May they all come back.

Rose of Sharon is actually in the hibiscus genus. Try a variety like 'Blushing Bride' I have that one and love it. The blooms are double, not in size, but fullness. Its like a ruffled flower that last longer than most hibiscus. They are very hardy shrubs, and here in Oregon they can reach 6-12 feet depending on variety.
